The Government is moving forward with the plan to remove the "traps" that had the objective of punishing imports and addressing the lack of foreign currency. Thus, next week the return of the "door-to-door" regime for online purchases abroad will finally be announced.

The AFIP will expand the number of products that can be purchased abroad. In addition, each Argentine will be able to make up to 5 purchases a year, although the products must not exceed the value of 1,000 dollars and the shipments must not weigh more than 50 kilos.

According to the draft, no more than 3 units of the same product can be purchased. And purchases cannot be made for commercial purposes.

The AFIP will also establish an online information regime so that the person who makes a purchase notifies that they received it at their home within 30 days of delivery. If you do not confirm such receipt, it will not be possible to receive another shipment until the situation is regularized.

Regarding the type of authorized merchandise, the following may be entered: food, textiles, toys and even cell phones such as iPhones, without the need to process an automatic license or an import stamp.

Goods that are purchased abroad will not be exempt and the buyer must pay a tax, although so far it is not clear how much that franchise will be.

The rule is specifically for couriers or private couriers, which have a "door-to-door" service, such as Fedex, DHL or UPS, among others. For Correo Argentino, however, the idea is to issue a similar resolution, which would have the same rules of up to five shipments per year.

In their vision, if imports are released via courier and the type of textile products brought into the country and at what prices is not thoroughly monitored, this can affect SMEs in the sector.

Conclusion

This government, unlike the previous one, intends to open up a whole range of possibilities regarding the acquisition of products through online purchases. In this way, it removes the supposed barrier to this activity imposed by Cristina Kirchner during her administration. However, with greater control—remember that purchases must be declared to the AFIP (Argentine Federal Public Revenue Administration)—the outlook becomes uncertain and leaves a feeling of unease. The percentage on purchases, which is not yet official, would be around 50% of the total amount purchased, so if the product costs $100, I will pay $100 + $50 that goes to the state coffers; I suppose a rather high tax for most people's liking.
