Movistar customers were the first to find out about the plan change scam, but the truth is that no phone company will provide unlimited Internet from next month. As El Destape learned, Claro will also limit the use of 3G and in this way the three companies distance users from the possibility of browsing freely.
From April 1 Claro will discontinue access to data outside of pre-assembled packages. The company is transferring all its post-paid customers (who pay at the end of the month for the use of the service) to new subscriptions that have "packs" of 3 GB. However, the company has to agree to maintain the plan for those who want to continue without limits in their browsing.
The other case of Claro is that of prepaids, which pay for Internet per day and will only have 50 MB per day at normal speed, although it already does this modality with some clients. Once they reach this limit they receive a message that they must respond to pay and recover browsing quality. If they do not do so, browsing will be slow and loading a web page could take minutes, which renders several applications and destinations on the same cell phone unusable.
In any case, the company argued that they notified all their clients through invoices for the previous two months as required by law and by note to the National Communications Commission, the regulatory body. In addition, this month they carried out an SMS campaign to remind them of the modifications.
Movistar customers found out in March that the company migrated them to new plans without consulting them in order to increase corporate income. The company began charging $3.30 for 15 MB packages that expire on the same day, a capacity three times less than Claro's. If users do not pay for the renewal when they run out, they cannot browse anymore.
Personal maintains a differentiated position, since it has always remained on the same path: it never offered the possibility of unlimited Internet. With the appearance of 3G in the country five years ago, the post payments and fixed subscriptions of this telecommunications firm have a certain quota of monthly megabytes according to the plan, after which the speed is drastically reduced to 128 KB. In addition, it maintains a browsing policy per day for prepaid lines.
With this, the three companies that dominate the cell phone business close ranks and eliminate the possibility of unlimited browsing on mobile phones within the country. The business side argues that data traffic multiplied by five in these years, so free navigation would saturate the service despite the expansion of the spectrum in the tenders that were held at the end of 2014.
