Although this wireless technology was unveiled four years ago, it is now that the first tests have been carried out in the real world, that is, outside the laboratory, reaching a transmission speed one hundred times greater than the current WiFi.

Specifically, a data transmission speed of 1 Gigabit per second has been achieved, according to the tests carried out. Even higher speeds are expected, since in experiments carried out in laboratories at the University of Oxford, 22 Gbps were reached.

"We have designed a smart lighting solution for an industrial environment in which data communication is carried out through light. We are also doing a pilot project creating a LiFi network to access the internet in your office," said Deepak Solanki, CEO of the technology company Velmenni.

How works

Harald Haas, creator of LiFi, holds the microprocessor created to use wireless light transmission technology. Li-Fi technology uses visible light for this transmission and only uses an LED light-emitting diode. In 2011, he demonstrated that with a single LED you can transmit more data than with a telephone antenna.

Haas assures that an LED bulb can be used "to transmit the internet ultra-fast."

LiFi will allow a lamp to have two functionalities: providing light and guaranteeing connectivity with the router.

It has also been shown that LiFi is safer than Wi-Fi and does not interfere with other systems, so it could be used without problems, for example on a plane, but it still has a big drawback, and that is that light cannot pass through walls.

LiFi vs WiFi

Companies like Samsung, LG are interested in manufacturing smartphones with LiFi light sensors.

But, despite its advantages, the system is not likely to replace WiFi entirely in the near future.

On the contrary. Both technologies could be used together to create safer and faster networks.

Researchers are working on adapting current devices to be compatible with Li-Fi.

PureLifi, the company created by Haas and his team, is offering an application for secure wireless access, says ScienceAlert.

The French technology company Oledcomm is also working with LiFi and is installing its own system in hospitals.

At the same time, Companies like Samsung, LG and other electronics makers are interested in making smartphones with LiFi light sensors.

Haas says LiFi could be combined with wireless data transmission, for a cleaner, brighter future.
