We need to innovate in new areas, execute against our plans, make difficult decisions in areas where it is not working and solve problems by driving customer value
This is what he said in July 2015 to his employees -- CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella
The company cannot compete with Android and iOS, the two platforms that have already managed to lead the smartphone market. Microsoft knows this, and it's moving quickly to fix it.
The creator of the iconic operating system that powers most of the world's personal computers is more dynamic than ever. Its founder, Bill Gates, once predicted that Microsoft needs to be a fast company, and change when necessary. Although the company fell far behind in the mobile market, at least it reacted in time, we believe.
The introduction of a new business model, where Windows 10 is free and the company produces applications for its competitors' platforms, speaks of a Microsoft that is not afraid to rotate 360 degrees to remain relevant, and to learn from its mistakes.
But What about Windows Phone? The mobile operating system has not performed well since it was launched. relaunched in 2010 as the generation of portable software that would unite the work and personal worlds in a single type of device. Its delay in expanding was a major part of its downfall. The world uses Android or iPhone, it's that simple and short. Few people want Windows Phone. Because? Apps. Developers are simply not interested in programming for Microsoft, despite the company's numerous attempts to improve its presence in this field.
What does all this mean?
To put it in perspective since 2010, Microsoft managed to have about 75 million smartphones "on the streets" with some version of Windows Phone/Mobile. While seventy-five million may seem like a large number, the reality is that Apple sells that many iPhones in just 4 months. A much higher number than that is the number of Android phones sold in the same period around the world.
How do we know that Microsoft is going to switch to Android?
Industry speculation has been going on for a long time. We know that Microsoft is in a position where it will try almost anything to avoid ending up like BlackBerry, a company that is on the verge of exiting the cell phone market entirely. BlackBerry is precisely the company that in its last blow of drowning launches the PRIV, a phone that for the first time runs the Google operating system, from which is expected to sell at least 5 million devices.
