A Tokyo technology company launched an application that detects if there are signs of pain after an injury or illness, based on the animal's facial expressions. This application uses artificial intelligence.

It is a widely used tool for owners who take responsibility and care about the well-being of their felines.

Methodology

This application arises through a compilation of 6,000 photos of cats using a method developed by a research team from the University of Montreal, in collaboration with Nihon University. This method consists of the evaluation of different elements, from the position of the ears to the eyes and whiskers of the animal. The results are entered into a calculator supported by artificial intelligence to determine if the feline is in pain.

According to the company's statistical calculations, the model has an accuracy rate of more than 90%. In this way, the app's developer, Carelogy Inc., hopes that the AI tool, called Cat Pain Detector, can help in early diagnosis and treatment. The app is currently available for free on the company's website. If used in veterinary medicine, it could eliminate any diagnostic errors made by veterinarians, allowing for more objective diagnoses.
