Facebook announced that the new version of its internal search engine; in addition to using a word or phrase to find a friend or family member; it will now allow you to search all the public posts of its almost 1.5 billion users. In fact, the company estimates that today it handles 1.5 billion searches a day.
The results are not a simple list, but rather the company will evaluate one over another based on the profile of each user and the origin of the result (the type of account from which it comes, if it is from a verified account or a normal publication, if it is content that was widely shared by other users, etc.).
With this update the platform changes the way in which it competes with Twitter and with Google for access to news content, something that Mark Zuckerberg, the creator of Facebook, said he explicitly aims for.
For now, universal searches only work for English-language profiles in the United States (in Web, Android and iPhone versions) but will later reach the rest of the users.
