Facebook announced today that it is going to begin purging the social network by eliminating fake accounts and all activity related to them, to prevent real users from receiving unwanted messages.
The firm's programming manager, Shabnam Shaik, reported in a statement published on the company's blog that the intent of these activities was to gain new friends from fake accounts on the social network by "liking" their sites, and then sending them "spam."
"Ours systems have been able to identify a large portion of this illegitimate activity and have been able to remove a substantial number of inauthentic 'likes'," added the manager.
With these actions "we hope to prevent the authors of this electronic waste from achieving their ultimate goal of sending inauthentic material to a large number of people," Shaik highlighted.
