The price of bitcoin continues to rise, trading above US$15,000, registering an increase of more than 50% in just one week. The virtual currency reached US$15,075.02, a new milestone.
It is considered that the reason for this recent rise is that bitcoin futures contracts will soon be launched, in which a fixed price will be established to be settled on a certain day, with the idea of hedging against price fluctuations.
On Friday, the cryptocurrency received an important boost in its process of becoming a stable financial product when the Futures Trading Commission (CFTC, in English) American gave the green light to futures contracts with bitcoins.
The Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) plans to begin trading futures contracts this week and a week later the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) will do so. This financial product will also be marketed on the Japanese Tokyo Financial Exchange.
At the beginning of this year the value of bitcoin was around US$1,000 and since then it has not stopped increasing, especially in recent months. Central banks warn of the unpredictability of this currency, which is not controlled by any issuing entity or government.
