For the moment, the platform continues to be presented as an experimental Google technology. It is a large-scale language model, a generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) model, in the style of ChatGPT, the most famous platform so far. Currently, it can be used on the official site.

Bard was first announced earlier this year as part of Google's AI initiatives. In May they added features and the extension to 180 countries, and now more features were presented.

New features

  • Listen to the answers: Bard will be able to speak out loud by clicking on the audio button on the platform. This can be used to know the correct pronunciation of a word or for the little ones to listen to a story devised on the spot by the AI.
  • Set and rename conversations: previous conversations with Bard can be saved, renamed, pinned or picked up where we left off.
  • Modify responses: the platform can be asked to change the tone or style, and it will offer answers in simple, long, short, professional options or informal (for now only in English).
  • Share answers: If what Bard told us interested us, or we want to send it to someone else, it is now simpler to share the entire chat or a part of what the platform told us.
  • Collaboration with Lens: Bard now incorporates Google Lens, both to find information about an image and to create content using it (only in English).
  • Coding: the new function allows you to export Python code to Replit.

What Bard is for

Experts in generative AI argue that "it is very useful for exploring ideas, thinking about everyday activities such as good exercise and diets. In addition, it allows the innovation of tools with certain materials, or asking it to generate poems, songs, stories or stories, something that many of us use with our children.

A "An interesting functionality is the possibility of selecting a wording of easy terms for difficult concepts... or telling an older adult how to use a cell phone." This generates a lot of enthusiasm in users who are looking to generate programming code, in different languages, and in ways to understand or debug it.

Among other things, Bard allows access to different response options. For example, if we ask for a recipe with certain ingredients, we will be able to access more than one dish. The same if we ask for titles for a note, gymnastics routines or a story starring a family member.

Bard is also designed as a complement to the Google search engine, clicking on a button to Google related topics, in a similar way to how Edge, Microsoft's browser, integrates ChatGPT as a "copilot".

5 ways in which you can use Bard, according to Google

  1. Discover and explore places iconic in your environment:Those people who are on vacation or want to know more about the town where they live can ask Bard for endless recommendations of historical sites, gastronomic attractions, parks and squares, or any place that is of interest to them. In addition, they will be able to make lists and itineraries for walks or simply use it to inspire themselves to have a much more complete experience in said country or city.
  2. Generate an infinite number of creative texts: the tool can generate different formats of creative texts, such as stories, code, emails, song lyrics, letters, etc. For example, writing a song about love in the 21st century or generating code for a simple application.
  3. Have summaries of complex topics: Sometimes it can be difficult to understand a complex article or people simply do not have enough time to read it carefully enough. Bard can help summarize a text for easy understanding. So much so that you could ask him to make, for example, a summary of literature in Latin America and its influence on the world.
  4. Help with programming: He can also be a great collaborator when carrying out programming and software development tasks, such as generating or debugging code. This capability is available in more than 20 programming languages such as C++, Go, Java, javascript, Python, and Typescript. And you can easily export Python code to Google Colab, without the need to copy and paste.
  5. Turn real-life problems or questions into action plans:from asking "where do I start if I want to sell my house?" to "How to find a job quickly if I am a recent graduate?" Bard can bring together ideas to implement a plan that allows us to go step by step towards these types of objectives.

The dilemma of privacy and the debt of imprecise responses

User data and also the information generated by interactions with AIs are a topic of debate due to the rise of these technologies. According to Google, with Bard users have the option to delete their history or disable sharing interactions with the platform. The company highlights that it is key for these models to improve collecting these interactions and learning from them, but that does not mean that they offer the option of not doing so for those who want to protect their privacy.

The company also highlighted that, being an experimental technology, it can sometimes give inaccurate or even inappropriate answers. "If in doubt, it's best to use the Google search button if you want to check a Bard answer," they explained, adding that user feedback will improve the service.
